News from the projects

Bodil Pallesen, Project Manager
Published 13th of September 2007

ADDA has asked the key staff in the project in Siam Reap as to what it is like working on the project. The human resources in the ADDA project are the main key to the achieved results, which have benefited the local farmers.

The project has now been running for 2 years out of 3, and ADDA has made a midway evaluation. The evaluation was very positive towards ADDA's project, and documented that the project has achieved solid results, which really help the active farmers in the project. A strong card has been the field schools and the subsequent self-help groups. But the foundation of the project is training of staff and the participant orientated approach of the project, which develops and gives staff, collaborators and the farmers feelings of ownership of the project. And, not least, the good daily management of the project. It is the human resources that boost the project. Motivation, co-operation, professional expertise, and not least of all, good spirits are characteristic for ADDA's staff as well as the belief that it will succeed.

What is it like working for ADDA in Siam Reap?

ADDA has asked 3 key local staff members in Siam Reap about what they think of working for ADDA. The 3 local key staff members are Sophin, Visal, gender consultant and Kimhian, vegetable consultant. ADDA's local Vice Coordinator Pich Sopin, who has worked for ADDA since 2002, first on the agricultural school project, and now on the women farmers project in the Siam Reap province. Sophin is very happy working for ADDA, and is very pleased with the team spirit the project is implemented in, and not least the good management. It is the human resources that lead to results.
"I am happy to work with ADDA and IWEP staff. Maybe you are aware that IWEP in Cambodia is implementing the activities in close conformity with the activity plan stated in the project document and great results are being produced such as Farmer Field Schools and Self Help Group formation. All these great achievements are the results of good team spirit of IWEP staff as well as good leaders from ADDA."
Visal, the ADDA project gender consultant is educated at Prek Leap agricultural school when the ADDA project was running there. She is a fantastic educator, and has great importance for the results IWEP has achieved so far. She has a feeling of great satisfaction by working for ADDA, as the project means so much for the poor women, and it has given them renewed hope. Visal writes this about working for ADDA: "I am happy to work with project because the project can help many poor people in the countryside especially women. Since 2005 I am starting to work with IWEP in Siem Reap province as the position of Gender Advisor. I like my job and I like to work with women group. Through the project I can build a good relationship with many people as women affair, NGOs network and Advocacy network in Siem Reap and in PP. Most of them know ADDA".
Kimhian is ADDA's vegetable consultant and has a good knack of teaching the women new methods, including the trainers who teach the women in the villages. As Kimhian writes, she is very happy working for ADDA, and is very committed: Kimhian writes:"For my 2 years time here with IWEP, I am very impressed by seeing the real empowerment of the Cambodian women. For instant, we have 14 women working in this project which mean more than 70% of the total staff. 70% of the staff working as the Village Extension Worker is women. Through Farmer Field School and Self Help Group we have approximately 75% female farmers attending.
More over, the situation of the women here is improving fast as a result of additional education opportunities as well as social status.
I am so happy that the support from IWEP can reach to the poor farmers and they can be able to improve the living by improving the agricultural productivity on their farm. Various new crops are being introduced and will reach the market in the near future.
All these achievements are results the good team spirit, working relations and well cooperation ADDA and the partner NGO Srer Khmer. Personally I am grateful to work with ADDA. I not only have an interesting job but also I am able to improve my personal qualifications. I feel committed to work with ADDA as long as possible."

The projects' ambitious aim is to train more than 6000 farmers, where more that 75% are women, chosen from 100 villages in 5 districts in the Siam Reap province. They are very poor farmers who have only a little land. The aim is empowerment of these women. See also ADDA's News and Views no. 12, which can also be found on www.adda.dk
